The ‘Not Far East’ meets west to support Cambodia school

28 May 2009

Final year students from the Blue Mountains International Hotel Management School hosted a ‘Not Far East’ degustation evening in the School’s Chambers Restaurant on Sunday night, raising over $10,000 in support of Sala Bai Hotel School in Cambodia.

The five course degustation menu including matching wines, was the creation of guest Executive Chef, Glen Ballis of Nedal’nij Vostok, meaning Not Far East, in Moscow. The recent Best Chef, Moscow made the journey from Russia to kindly donate his culinary expertise at the request of his son Daniel, who will be graduating from Blue Mountains International Hotel Management School next month.

“This is a great example of what our School is all about - the development of young managers with high level business and practical skills, and a keen sense of corporate social responsibility which makes them sought after by industry worldwide,” said Jane Adams, Campus Director.

Funds raised by this event will translate into scholarships for young Cambodians to receive practical and theoretical hospitality training at Sala Bai, which is completely funded by voluntary contributions. The diploma awarded on completion of their studies will enable them to take part in the development of the economy and tourism in their country, and provide them with independence and a key to a future of exciting career opportunities.

“It was inspiring to see students and the tourism industry so readily embrace the concept that such little money helps underprivileged Cambodian youth to study hospitality and tourism and change their lives forever,” stated Randall Walker, Chairman, Blue Mountains Tourism Limited (BMTL).

BMTL member, Maurice Cooper worked closely with the School’s final year students to organise the event that was sponsored by local and national tourism businesses including Swiss Hotel, Four Seasons Sydney, Toga Hospitality Group and Taronga Zoo. The event was also widely supported by the Blue Mountains community with several key local tourism operators such as Scenic World, The Carrington Hotel, Rooster Restaurant, Bygone Beautys, Blue Mountains Holiday Lets and Explore The Blue Mountains in attendance.
