GUEST LECTURER PROGRAM

On 17 April, the School was pleased to have Sofitel as its guests for the Career Development guest lecturer program. MsTanya Taggart, Recruitment Manager for Sofitel Sydney, Ms Vivian Duffield, Human Resource Manager Sofitel Brisbane, and Ms Stephanie Vitale Human Resource Manager from Sofitel Melbourne, conducted a session with students about the Sofitel brand and the different properties and training programs available to recruits.

 As part of Career Development’s course program, on April 16 Ms Robyn Frahn, HR Officer Sheraton Mirage Port Douglas, gave a presentation in class about the property and positions available to students and also conducted interviews with students. On 23 April, Ms Haywell Sebastian, HR Manager, Hayman Island gave presentation on Hayman Island and positions available.

TWO BMHS GRADUATES APPOINTED GENERAL MANAGERS

Two Blue Mountains Hotel School graduates have recently been appointed General Managers of new properties in Australia: Mr Tish Nyar at Rydges World Square Sydney and Mr Paul Schmeja at Mantra Deep Blue in Victoria.

In March 2007 Rydges Hotels announced it had won its bid for management of the Avillion Hotel in Sydney’s CBD, a four and a half star hotel situated in the World Square precinct and comprising 445 guest rooms and suites, now branded as Rydges World Square, Sydney.

BMHS graduate Mr Tish Nyar, the former GM of Rydges North Sydney and area manager for the Sydney region, has been appointed as the general manager of Rydges World Square.

A corporate cadet for Rydges on graduation Tish started out at Bobby McGees, Darling Harbour, moving onto F&B management roles with Accor’s Darling Harbour hotels and Novotel Sydney Olympic Park. Tish then moved back to Rydges as EAM Rydges Parramatta, followed by Opening General Manager Rydges St Kilda Rd Suites in Melbourne, then General Manager of Rydges Capital Hill in Canberra before his move back to Sydney.

Mantra Hotels, Resorts and Apartments recently announced the appointment of BMHS graduate Mr Paul Schmeja to the role of General Manager to oversee the day to day operations of the newest resort in the Mantra brand - the Mantra Deep Blue Resort in Warrnambool, Victoria which opened in May.

He has held several senior management roles in the hospitality industry including Program Manager – Village Operations at the Athletes’ Village during the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games. Paul previously worked as Front Office Manager at the Mansion Hotel in Werribee Park, Victoria, and as Operations Manager for the Somerset on Elizabeth and Somerset Gordon Place Hotels in Melbourne.

The four and half star Mantra Deep Blue Resort in Warrnambool, Victoria is the only international standard hotel on the Western Gateway to the Great Ocean Road and Shipwreck Coast. It features a total of 75 hotel rooms and five apartments, licensed café restaurant, lounge and a geothermal bathhouse.

“We are very proud of these achievements,” says Blue Mountains Hotel School (BMHS) Principal Mr Guy Bentley. “These appointments are indicative of the high calibre of our graduates and the confidence that industry has in their professionalism and leadership qualities.”
HEARTS FOR RUGBY IN ORANGE

On Friday 27 April, level 2 event management students went on a trip to the NSW country town of Orange to lend a hand operationally for a Hearts For Rugby fundraiser at Ross Hill Wines, the family business managed by BMHS graduate Mr James Robson (1995). Hearts for Rugby raises money for people injured seriously while playing the game - many are quadraplegics or suffer other severe paralysis - and the VIP guest on the day was footy legend John Eales.

Event Management lecturer. Mr Steve Tucker accompanied a group of 12 students who were involved in food preparation, bar service, and food and drinks service. “the students did a sterling job under quite difficult conditions – the day was cold and wet,” says Mr Tucker, “but they demonstrated once again the professionalism and great attitude that we endeavour to instil in our students.”
