Following an excellent buffet lunch in the formal dining room and the café, parents and graduands, staff, students and other guests assembled at the Grand Ballroom, Peppers Fairmont Resort for the formal ceremony at 2.30pm.

WELCOME-TO-ALUMNI LUNCH IN “COOKIE’S CAFÉ”

As the result of a student competition this semester to come up with a name for the café, Mr Val Cook was asked to unveil a plaque on the external wall of the cafe which, to his pleasant surprise, bore the logo: “Cookie’s Café” and a glazed orange cookie motif. The student winner of the competition was Ms Natalie Belbin.

The crowd including special guests, the BMHS Directors, Mr Fritz Gubler and Mr Max Player, Principal Mr Guy Bentley, Career Development Manager Ms Janette Illingsworth, and Vice Principal, Hotel Services, Mr Steven Tucker, toasted Mr Cook and the newly named café. Students also had the opportunity to register for the alumni website on laptops. From next semester all 3.1 students will be registered for the website to give them time to familiarise themselves with its features while still on campus. Mr Cook then made three special encouragement presentations, the Three Pillar awards, to Ms Roxine Chiao (Level 1), Ms Jessica Wheatley (Level 2) and Mr Michael Rose (Level 3.1) in recognition of individual achievement and contribution to campus life this semester.

The Student Achiever is one who has a record of sustained academic achievement and demonstrated the capabilities and personal qualities required to make a significant contribution to the tourism industry in New South Wales. The Awards are open to all NSW public and private institutions offering degrees, diplomas and certificate courses in tourism studies, and are available to Australian citizens who reside in New South Wales.

Blue Mountains Hotel School nominated second year student Ms Jessica Wheatley for the Student Achiever Award for studies in Tourism and Hospitality for the 2006 academic year.

While on her current Career Development placement at Four Seasons Sydney, Jessica let us know that “I was successful in being presented one of the twelve tourism awards. I received a beautiful trophy/plaque, $500 and a certificate.

” “I congratulate Jessica on behalf of the staff and students for her success at these awards which she thoroughly deserves,” says Mr Guy Bentley, CEO/Principal, BMHS, “This award demonstrates the continuing high calibre of Blue Mountains Hotel School students and it is very gratifying to have that publicly and independently acknowledged by NSW Tourism and by the Minister.”
