"NIGHT UNDER THE STARS" CRUISE

On Saturday 17th March, students, staff and members of the Blue Mountains Hotel School community enjoyed a lively and memorable evening onboard Vagabonds M.V Princess on Sydney Harbour for the “Night Under the Stars” Sala Bai Fundraising Harbour Cruise.

The event, hosted and organised by eight Event Management students raised over $2,500 to sponsor travel costs to Cambodia for BMHS graduate Ms Rosemary Higgerson, currently on staff as Assistant Front Office Manager. Ms Higgerson has volunteered to work on staff as a teacher at the Sala Bai Hotel School in Siem Reap, a special project of the ORION hotel schools (see NEWS Sept 2005, April 2006 and Oct 2006)

At 7.30pm, 150 guests boarded the harbour cruise from the Star City Casino Wharf and enjoyed a three course cocktail menu, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, live DJ entertainment, and a surprise performance by “Latin Explosion”, a group of capoeira and Brazilian samba dancers. Tickets were sold for $85 and included coach transport for students and staff.

Funds were raised primarily through ticket sales through a silent auction on the night. The event management team – Ms Jessica Wheatley, Ms Priya Patel, Ms Kara Salter, Ms Tara Flegg, Mr Adam Brown, Mr Mark Pattikawa, Mr Caesar Go, Ms Arlini Wibowo – thanked the Leura Golf Club, NSW Rugby, Vagabond Cruises, Padstow Food Service Distributors, Upper Mountain Clothing, Moontree Leura, and Katoomba Fine Flowers for their valued and generous support.

“CITTASLOW” CIVIC RECEPTION AT CARRINGTON HOTEL

On Friday 16 March, Blue Mountains Hotel School was proud to be involved with the Civic Reception lunch held at The Carrington Hotel for the official “Slow Food” Italian delegation that awarded Cittaslow (‘Slow City’) accreditation to the town of Katoomba and the region of the Blue Mountains.

Both BMHS Level 1 and English Language School students worked with the local Slow Food movement in preparation for the event, peeling hundreds of locally grown chestnuts for the three-course lunch of local fare, and assisting with cooking and service on the day.
The School was included on the program as an official sponsor and the efforts of BMHS students were publicly acknowledged on the day. Several staff including gastronomy lecturer Ms Joanne Cunningham and Dean Ms Helen Batey attended the event.

“Cittaslow” accreditation recognises “cities given life by people with a respect for times past, rich in places to meet, in theatres, workshops, cafes, restaurants, spaces for imagination, with intact landscape and skilled handycraftsmen, where people can still appreciate the slow wholesome passing of the seasons with good eating and good health provided by natural foods with respect for tradition.”

MASQUERADE

On 27 March, a team of Level 2 Event Management students organised and hosted a Masquerade cocktail ball in Chambers Restaurant as a fundraiser to sponsor travel costs to Cambodia for BMHS graduate Ms Rosemary Higgerson, who has volunteered to work on staff as a teacher at the Sala Bai Hotel School in Siem Reap, a special project of the ORION hotel schools (see NEWS Sept 2005, April 2006 and Oct 2006) The event was well supported by staff and students and members of the local community from Leura and Katoomba who were required to wear a mask to hide their identity.

Many weird, wonderful and creative masks were created for the occasion as well as unusual entertainment provided by local roving circus performers Circo Blurto. Canapés and cocktails were served throughout and the dancing went on well into the evening. Thanks in part to Student President Logan Miller s auctioneering skills and also to good ticket sales, the event made a total profit of $1,435.00 and was able to make a significant contribution to sponsoring Ms Higgerson’s efforts.
